Board FAQ

Current Board of Directors

What does the Board do?

Decisions by Directors can have immediate and long-term impacts on the VUL and on ultimate in Metro Vancouver. The Board is responsible for the governance of the VUL. This includes setting the future direction of the Society through our Strategic Plan, establishing priorities and policies, and providing oversight to staff. Staff are responsible for management and operations.

Why should I look to join the Board?

If you have ideas about how the VUL as a whole can improve, this is your chance to help shape our direction. Your experience, background, and input will be treated with respect and valued by your fellow Board members. Getting involved is also one of the best ways to give back to our sport. Your professional expertise and guidance can help the VUL remain healthy now and in the future. In addition, you will gain additional skills and experience that will be of value to you in your current and future jobs.

What is the time commitment?

Terms are two years in length. The Board meets every six weeks for about 2-3 hours, and directors spend about 5-10 additional hours per month, depending on their role and committee involvement. There are 3-4 events that Board members are encouraged to attend throughout the year, as well (e.g. Ultimate Day, Awards Banquet, AGM).

Are there any perks?

Aside from the "rock star status" at parties and food at Board meetings, there are no direct perks. This is a volunteer position.

Who should apply?

If you are a member of the VUL and some of the above sounds interesting, consider declaring your candidacy. Or if you know someone who would make a good Board member, you can nominate them. We have had active Board members who were 20 years old and 50 years old with everything in between. Age or ultimate experience are not a barrier in either direction.

How are directors elected?

All declarations and nominations must be submitted to the Executive Director one week prior to the AGM, which is normally held in November. Instructions for submission will be posted on the home page each fall.

At the AGM, you will be asked to speak for 2-3 minutes about your background and your hopes and objectives for your term on the Board. Voting will then be done by secret ballot, and winners are announced at that AGM.

About 50% of the Board is elected each year, with terms lasting two years, to provide some continuity on a year-to-year basis.

Anything else?

If you have any questions, you can email the Board via board@vul.ca, and we will reply as quickly as we can!
