Tryout information for 2026 summer has been updated.
Overview:
Vortex offers an elite team-based coaching and training program for High School Ultimate players for the summer season.
Teams are formed after tryouts at the start of the season. Teams are classified as Touring and Regional teams, and compete in Open and Women divisions at British Columbia Ultimate Championship (BCUC - Regionals). The Touring teams aim to qualify for the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC - Nationals) via the BCUC - Regionals.
All teams participate in other local tournaments throughout the summer season as determined by the Vortex staff.
Tryout Information:
Touring and Regional teams will be formed after tryouts at the start of the summer season. All players must register online before they are permitted to participate in the tryout.

- Touring Tryouts
- Suitable for players with previous competitive ultimate experience (exceptions made on case by case basis)
- Players trying out for touring teams must be able to attend BCUC (Provincials) in Kelowna on July 11-12 and CUC (Nationals) in Surrey from August 9-12
- Make sure to bring a light/dark jersey (no grey), cleats, and water to tryouts please!
- Regional Tryouts
- Suitable for players with 2yrs or less of playing experience
- Players trying out for Regional teams must be able to attend BCUC (Provincials) in Surrey on July 11-12
- Players on regional teams will not attend nationals in a playing capacity.
- Make sure to bring a light/dark jersey (no grey), cleats, and water to tryouts please!
- Tryouts schedule is as follows:
- Tryout #1: Thursday, May 28th at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (Surrey)
- For Touring teams ONLY - 6pm to 8.30pm
- Tryout #2: Saturday, May 30th at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (Surrey)
- For Touring teams - 10am to 12.30pm
- For Regional teams - 1pm to 3.30pm
- Tryout #3: Sunday, May 31st at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (Surrey)
- For Regional teams ONLY - 10am to 12.30pm
- Tryout #1: Thursday, May 28th at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (Surrey)
When a player or parent registers for tryouts, this registration applies to all sets of tryouts - players do not need to register more than once.
Players successful in a spot on a roster should be prepared to accept their position by (Date TBC), and be able to pay team fees by (Date TBC).

Single player - $25.00 (incl. GST)

- Registration is completed online. We accept payment by credit card, Visa Debit, or e-transfer.
- If a player U19 registers themselves, they must also get Parental Consent. Emails are sent to the player and parent/guardian with instructions.

Touring and Regional Teams
Note:
- Touring teams will be formed with the intent of qualifying for, and competing in, the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC Nationals) 2026
- Regional teams are formed with the intent of playing local tournaments (upto 3) including BC Ultimate Championship (separate stream than Touring)
- Teams are formed after tryouts
- Both streams (Touring and Regional) have Open and Women division
- Financial assistance is available for families looking for some help.
Program information:
- Format: Team based training in separate Open and Women divisions.
- Duration: June to August (3 times per week)
- Timeslot:
- Participants will receive exact information about their training schedule after teams are formed
- Excludes statutory holidays
- Schedule: 2-3 hrs per session
- Location: TBD (typical practice locations will be in the City of Surrey)
- Age: All players should be in high school, from age 14 to 18 years (grade 9-12) as of December 31st the ongoing year.
- Inclusivity: All players are welcome, including LGBTQ2+ and transgender
- Equipment required: Cleats or runners can be used on synthetic turf fields, but we recommend cleats. Everyone must bring a water bottle, and a dark AND light t-shirt. Personalized jerseys will be provided by July.

Fees (Touring and Regionals):
A) Single Player (Base Camp^)
Touring - TBC
Regional - TBC
^Base Camp Fees include:
- Elite coaching - Each team will have three dedicated coaches, who will guide you through tryouts, practices, games and tournaments.
- All tournament and event fees including Misfit Cup, BCU Championship (BCUC)^^ and Vortex Cup (if not qualified for CUC)
- Apparel - One Standard reversible, Two personalized sublimated jerseys and One pair of shorts.
- Fields, equipment, membership, insurance, and administration fee.
^^BCU Championships for Touring teams will be in Kelowna. The fees include accommodation at UBC-O, bus transport and meals (Saturday breakfast and Sunday breakfast)
Regionals teams will compete in Surrey for their stream, hence lower fees than touring teams.
B) Single Player (CUC - Touring only) - $262.50
This fee is due AFTER qualification to CUCs has been secured at BCUC. A separate payment link will be shared with participants post qualification.
Estimated CUC Travel Fees include:
- UC fees
- Coaching
- Field food
- Rentals
- Insurance and other administration fees
Players are responsible for their own transportation to/from Surrey, BC
