Chaperones play a key role in the VUL by ensuring that youth teams have a positive experience. Chaperones help youth players and their teams with skills, strategy, rules, Spirit of the Game, as well as ensuring their safety during each game.
Time Commitment
We will assign you to one team, and we request that you work with them for the duration of that league. Please see the Programs and Camps page for more information on times and dates for each league.
Orientation
There will be an orientation session with the Youth Coordinator prior to each league.
Qualifications
Chaperones must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Complete and pass a Criminal Record Check (this is paid for by the VUL)
- Agree to and complete the Chaperone Conduct Form
- Some experience playing ultimate, most of which should be in the VUL
- Experience Coaching or Mentoring in a sport environment
- Ideally 1 or more years being a Captain or Assistant Captain in the VUL
- Ideally some experience working with youth
- 21 years of age or older
Recognition
As a Chaperone you will receive:
- a small stipend
- 50% reimbursement of the cost of an NCCP coaching course *
* The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is a coach training and certification program for sports across Canada. Ultimate Canada is developing ultimate-specific courses for coaches under this program. They have launched an entry-level course (Community Sport - Initiation) and another course is in development (Competition - Introduction). The Community Sport course is offered by BC Ultimate a few times per year. In addition, aspiring coaches can also take 'multi-sport' courses that are applicable to all sports, including Competition Introduction Part A or Part B. See the Coaches Association of BC for a schedule of those courses. To be eligible for this benefit, you must Chaperone a team for the duration of one full league. Maximum one subsidy per year.
